First Wave Riot Fest 2018 lineup announced

Woman Who Gave Greta Van Fleet Their Name Laughed it Off

The woman whose name was adopted by rising-star rock band Greta Van Fleet said she “laughed it off” when she heard. Gretna Van Fleet, an 87-year-old resident of the band’s hometown of Frankenmuth, Mich., saw them for the first time in five years last week.

“They’ve matured, I’ll say that,” the saxophonist and pianist told Billboard. “It’s not really my kind of music, but people enjoy it and the boys did a good job of presenting it.” Asked about the name she said, “it’s been far more than I expected. I really didn’t have anything to do with naming the band or anything. When they told me they were going to do that I kind of laughed it off. When I found out they really did it I thought, ‘That won’t last long. That’s not a name for a band.’ But they just kept growing and more people ask me about it and I’ve been far more involved than I expected.”

Bassist Sam Kiszka explained that the idea had come from one of the band’s early members, saying that “his grandpa told him that he needed to go cut wood for Gretna Van Fleet. He heard it, thought, ‘That’s an interesting name.’ He brought it to the rest of us and I think it was Josh [Kiszka, frontman] who said, ‘Let’s drop the n out of Gretna,’ so it was Greta Van Fleet, and that rolls off the tongue better. I think it’s an interesting name because it’s different. You don’t really know what kind of music is going to be produced by this group. I really like that aspect of the name.”

They recently confirmed that their debut full-length album would be released this year. “I think there’s some maturity on the album that you can hear, musically,” Sam said. “We were able to take our time and try new arrangements and new writing techniques. I think we’ve become a lot more savvy in the studio as well, so a lot of that will translate to the album. It’s very energetic and aggressive.”

Initech Ceo Indicted

Vinnie C. Morocco, Initech’s President and CEO, was arrested during an FBI raid on the company’s headquarters this morning. Sources say the famously easy-going Morocco was leading the software and music festival titan’s Monday Morning Rap Session, when he was pulled away in handcuffs after being indicted on several counts of financial crimes.

While details of the investigation are sealed, several sources inside the U.S. Justice Department hinted at Morocco’s actions during the company’s recent acquisition of Chicago-based independent music festival Riot Fest as the root of the affable leader’s troubles. Due to this morning’s events, the SEC has put the Initech-Riot Fest on hold.

“We don’t know where this guy came from, or why he thinks khaki pants are cool,” stated Riot Fest spokesperson Riot Fest Twitter Person. “Nobody on the Riot Fest staff wanted this merger to happen, and we got the results that we wanted.”

Riot Fest’s founder and managing partner, Michael A. Petryshyn, could not be reached for comment. However, the usually loose-lipped festival guru is reportedly feeling “confused, betrayed, and relieved,” and is likely fishing, according to several employees.

More developments on this breaking story will be reported as they happen.

Due to the recent arrest and indictment of Initech President and CEO Vinnie C. Morocco, the Initech-Riot Fest merger has been placed on indefinite hold by the SEC.

UPDATE (April 2, 2018) — Due to the recent arrest and indictment of Initech President and CEO Vinnie C. Morocco, the Initech-Riot Fest merger has been placed on indefinite hold by the SEC.

We’re thrilled to announce the completion of Riot Fest’s new partnership with software giant Initech. Effective immediately, Initech assumes a controlling interest in Riot Fest and all of its valuable assets — from the festival to this website and all points in between. More information on our new partners can be seen in this informational video that Initech has produced for all of you.

“The addition of Riot Fest builds on Initech’s world-leading portfolio of over 600 marquee festivals such as: Hullabalooza, Lolla-Pa-Foods-A, Waynestock, Blunderbuss, Chef Aid, and Bend Aid, to name a few,” said Vinnie C. Morocco, Initech’s CEO and president. “We’ve gone the distance from our humble beginnings as the ‘little Dallas-based software company that could’, and we’ve continued to expand the industry’s most unparalleled and scalable festival platform, all while driving strong revenue and growth for Initech on a worldwide basis… all made possible with the support of such partners as Nakatomi, Zalinsky Auto Parts, and Umbrella Corporation. Riot Fest is another crown jewel in this festival channel strategy, one that appeals to both fans and artists in uniqueness and experience, and lineups that are all brought to you by InGen.”

“Alongside such powerhouses as Stark Industries, Wayne Enterprises, and Duff Beer, we are strengthening our commitment to create the best possible experience at Riot Fest,” said Michael A. Petryshyn, founder, CEO, and managing partner of Riot Fest (An Initech Company). “Hooli will drive this partnership with Initech, empowering us to enhance the festival while preserving the integrity of the event and brand that we’ve thoughtfully built over the past 14 years.”

“Partnering with Initech and Madrigal Electromotive is a milestone for Riot Fest.” added Petryshyn. It opens up tremendous opportunities for us to continue to evolve the Riot Fest experience in an exciting, powerful way.” The evolution includes an elevated dining experience for hungry moshers, featuring the time-tested tastes of Satriale’s Pork Store, Pizza Planet, Good Burger, Big Kahuna Burger… all washed down with the coldest Duff Beer in the world.

Additionally, Initech now also owns a share of this very website, RiotFest.org. With Initech on board, significant investment in the site and enhancements to the editorial experience are planned. Riot Fest will continue to plan and execute the day-to-day operations of the festival and signature Riot Fest initiatives, such as curating cutting-edge, forward-thinking content, as well as initiatives and involvement with the Chicago community. Riot Fest’s local club show promotion company, Riot Fest Presents, Presented by Los pollos Hermanos, will continue to be a priority.

They say that selling out is the new buying in, and we’re looking forward to sharing with you the fruits of this sale with all of you, including new office initiatives such as Casual Khaki Fridays, and our line of fresh branded merchandise for the 2018 festival season.

Vans Warped Tour Unveils Final Cross-Country Lineup, Founder Kevin Lyman: ‘This Is It, Kids’

By: Sarah Pittman

Sum 41, Taking Back Sunday, Underoath, The Used, Less Than Jake, Black Veil Brides, Every Time I Die, and Reel Big Fish are just a small sample of the bands helping Vans Warped Tour go out in style with its final full cross-country tour.
Following two gigs in Japan in late March and early April, Warped’s final major road trip is scheduled June 21 through Aug. 5. The fun begins at the Pomona Fairplex in Pomona, Calif.
The lineup was announced Thursday afternoon, followed by a press conference and BBQ at the Vans Global Headquarters in Costa Mesa, Calif.
Pollstar chatted with Warped Tour founder Kevin Lyman earlier this week about putting together the final cross country lineup.
“It’s a lot of bands that maybe have played before and bands that I think could use maybe another boost from the Warped exposure,” Lyman said. “Basically it’s a lot of bands who have been a part of Warped tour in the past, people that I like to tour with and I’m looking forward to spending time with.
“I think it’s a lineup that’s going to appeal to people who have been to Warped Tour before. Maybe want to come back and have a great last time out there, some fond memories of Warped Tour. As well as, I think we have enough young bands that we’ll get a lot of first-time attendees that will want to come and see it.
“I think the interest in Warped Tour almost is kind of one of those things where people started taking it for granted in many ways: ‘Oh, Warped Tour’s going to be here this year. Oh, I’ll go next year.’ This is it, kids. Like I said [Monday] in the video, this is it, kids. This is the last time we’re driving around the country for two months.”

Lyman noted that he’s been getting emails from a lot of parents who came to Warped Tour in the ’90s who want to bring their kids to experience the festival.
“They say, ‘You know what?  Warped Tour changed my life in the way that I look at nonprofits, in the way that my mind opened to music.’ So I’m getting a lot of positive [feedback], a lot of notes from people like that.
He added that he’s also been getting calls from crew members who want to work a couple of days of the trek.
“They may be doing other tours but they just want to be a part of it, which makes you feel that you did do something, even though you sometimes dwell on the trolls online who can troll the narrative, but it really did mean something to a lot of people all these years.”
Of course, a number of bands have reached out to Lyman to play the final tour. He added that the lineup seen in the poster above doesn’t include “a bunch of bands that we’re holding back.  Because we’re going to want some real surprises. We’re going to want people to come in and just have a [reaction of], ‘Oh, crap?! They’re on that show?’”
With philanthropy and nonprofits having been such a big part of Warped Tour over the years, it should be no surprise that Lyman was especially excited about a new initiative that’s being launched during the trek to combat opioid addiction. Fans will be encouraged to download the FEND (Full Energy No Drugs) app, which will use gamification to provide education about opioids, with the incentive of qualifying to win tickets to Warped Tour or a special acoustic set from some of the artists.

“The only thing that I’m really trying to figure out is how to continue the mission of philanthropy and education that Warped has always been about, beyond the music,” Lyman said. “The music will figure itself out. It’s how do I help those people continue what they’ve been able to build in those parking lots? So that’s kind of really what my focus has been on over the last couple of months. How we’re going to continue that mission.”

Collector tickets, as well as general admission tickets for select shows, are on sale now. GA tickets for most dates go on sale March 8.
Check back next week for the full interview with Lyman.
